JACK SPRAT AND FAT

JACK SPRAT AND FAT As a holistic veterinary consultant, I am on a constant quest to understand the nutritional needs of both my animal patient and its owner. Having been on this quest for the last 23 years of my 34 years of veterinary professional life, I have found the needs of both to be similar. The Sprats should have eaten the good fat. If they did so, Jack and his wife would have been at their normal weight. The good fat found in such cold-water fish as mackerel, sardines, salmon, cod, and tuna provide the omega-3 fatty acids that have the ability to decrease our total cholesterol levels and our LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Increasing the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids in our diet makes one less hungry for the omega-6 fatty acids found in processed foods. Ocean Essentials HEART HEALTH by Nutrilite is one step in the goal of consuming a ratio of 4:1 omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids. (Most people on a typical western diet consume at a dangerous 40:1 ratio.) C. Edgar Sheaffer, VMD
