Fred Harteis News Articles - From the merely annoying to the budget-busters, here's what to watch out for in travel, banking, credit cards, real estate, investments and more.
Paper tickets
What it is You remember actual airline tickets, don't you? If you aren't comfortable with an electronic flight record, you'll pay a steep price for an old-fashioned paper version. What's so bad The paper-ticket fee is all about forcing you to go electronic, thus saving the airlines money.
Airlines: Talking to a person
What it is Call to book a flight or redeem your miles, or stop by the airport counter, and you could pay an extra $5 to $20. What's so bad Another coercive fee to keep you online. "It's like being charged to see a teller," says Chris McGinnis, editor of Expedia's Travel Trendwatch newsletter.
Changing your flight
What it is ~ A high fee to rebook your flight if your plans change. What's so bad The top fee has doubled over the past few years. Ouch! $175-$250 (depending on class of service).
Travel
Airlines: Reserving an aisle seat
What it is ~ A fee to snag a coveted seatWhat's so bad How many ways can an airline nickel-and-dime you? Next up: $5 to use the bathroom?
Travel ~ Overpacking
What it is Check a third bag or surpass the 50-pounds-a-bag limit, and you'll pay. What's so bad Just when you're being forced to check more luggage, the airlines are cracking down on weight.
Car rental: Insurance
What it is One of the most confusing rental-car add-ons, insurance is optional in most states. Where mandatory, it's built into the basic cost. What's so bad You probably don't need it. Most car insurance policies cover your rental. Some credit cards do, too.
Car rental: Excise taxes
What it is ~ Want to build a new stadium? Have out-of-towners pay for it! The most annoying car-rental fee might be the one you pay to support a project you'll only drive by. Excise taxes typically add 2% to 5% to your bill.
